The Plein Air Painters of New Mexico (PAPNM) Winter Show, also known as “Winter Light 2024,” is a juried exhibition and sale of original en plein air artworks by PAPNM members. The show runs from November 23 to December 31, 2024, at the Legends of the West Gallery in Santa Fe, New Mexico. The exhibition features two-dimensional artworks created outdoors, capturing the beauty of natural light and landscapes.

PAPNM is dedicated to preserving and promoting the tradition of painting en plein air, providing opportunities for artists to paint together and showcase their work.

What is En Plain Air Painting

En plein air painting is the practice of painting outdoors, directly from the natural environment. The term “en plein air” is French for “in the open air.” This technique allows artists to capture the natural light, colors, and atmosphere of a scene in real-time, creating a more vibrant and dynamic representation of the landscape.

Artists who paint en plein air often use portable easels and materials, allowing them to move around and find the perfect spot to set up and paint. This method became particularly popular in the 19th century with the Impressionist movement, as artists like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir sought to depict the changing qualities of light and atmosphere in their work.
