Landscape and Seascape: Abstracting Anything
Move between representation and abstraction with award winning artist Anton Nowels. Students will discover that using memory in the painting process allows for more inventive painting. The workshop will include discussions of artist using both Plein Air and abstraction in their work including: Richard Diebenkorn, Eric Aho, Sergei Bongart, Maynard Dixon, Franz Klein, Monet, Josef Albers, Joan Mitchell and more. Anton will demonstrate representational abstraction in the studio.
Date: January 3, 4, 5, 2025
All levels of experience are welcome.
Medium: All 2D mediums. (Instructor will teach in oils)
Day 1: Design- Variety and Unity
Day 2: Color – Building a color family
Day 3: Series – Memory and Deconstruction
Anton will provide photos to work from, and you can also bring your own.
10 Student Minimum, no restriction for maximum.

Supply List:
Paints: Ivory black, Cad Yellow Light, Cad yellow hue, Cad red light, Magenta, Sap Green, Viridian, Cerulean hue, French ultramarine, Titanium white
Brushes: Variety of small, medium and large brushes. 3″ wide brush, House painting brush works great.
Palette knives and brayer: RGM large painting spatulas, Blick palette knife set (Traditional 6 knife set), or similar. Black hard rubber roller (brayer), 3″ to 6″ size.
4 to 6 Canvas or linen panels 16″x20″ or larger. Or Blick acrylic Primed Cotton canvas (stretched or roll) 16″x20″ or larger. At least 6. We will also use 6″x6″ canvas panels, at least 10, or use 1 as a template on a larger canvas.
Solvents: Weber odorless turpenoid, Gamblin Gamisol Odorless mineral spirits.
